Take an acting class -- nothing will make you a better actors' director than trying a bit of acting yourself. Find a friend of a friend's band, offer to make a music video for them, and shoot it and cut it yourself. Fincher honed his editorial chops on music videos and so can you. Take a walk through a thrift store and look for cool props and costumes -- you'll never take the work costumers and props people do again. Write pitch documents (that's hard!).
