Here's how you can elicit valuable feedback from your employees.

Firstly, create an open and safe environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas. This can be achieved by establishing trust, respecting confidentiality, and demonstrating a genuine interest in their perspectives. Secondly, actively listen to your employees during feedback sessions. Give them your full attention, ask clarifying questions, and avoid interrupting or dismissing their concerns. This will help them feel valued and understood, increasing the likelihood that they will share valuable insights. Thirdly, provide regular opportunities for feedback.

Establishing Trust is the very fundamental of eliciting and receiving honest feedback. If this is done properly and sincerely then half the job is done. ER/HR professionals need to ensure that they keep up the trust of the employees / associates on their feedback. If this is broken even in small instances then it is likely to create huge resistance in eliciting the right kind of feedback later.

By implementing these strategies, I aim to create a culture where feedback is valued, encouraged, and acted upon, ultimately leading to a more engaged and satisfied workforce.

Being approachable for the employees and associates would ensure that they can feel free to share feedback with you as an ER / HR professional. Please understand that Any ER event is actually bottled-up frustration due to non-availability or lack of action of management w.r.t. feedback. A lot of situations can actually be warded off simply by listening proactively.

Reach out proactively, engage in a variety of ways to express your truthful and genuine interest in individuals, ask questions, share experiences this encourages individuals to share without apprehensions.

Always start meeting with a casual greeting and asking employees how they are doing. Never impose a demeanor that makes them feel inferior. If you're not able to respond to their chats or emails immediately, make sure to let them know that you did not disregard their chats and applogize for not picking up their concerns immediately. Exercise empathy and sympathy during conversations. Keep things light whenever possible and laugh with them whenever appropriate.

Encourage individuals to share experiences, encourage them via your own. However be discreet, individuals may be apprehensive of best named or quoted due to a variety of reasons.

Providing anonymity simply implies NOT collecting PII i.e. Personal Identifiable Information. This lets the respondent provide honest feedback with a confidence of not being reprimanded by the superiors of the heirarchy basis their inputs. This paves the way to achieve more reliable results and at times even greater response rates.

Anonymity is the foundational pillar of the trust in ER / HR. If anonymity code is broken then employees/ associates would never share honest feedback or may not even approach for providing feedback. Fear of backlash by line managers is the biggest concern wrt anonymity and hence this is a must-ensure tenet.

Always acknowledge the feedback, even if you are unable to act upon it immediately, circle back, share updates, guide them with larger objectives to build patience and trust.

Following through on any feedback and ensuring close looping with employees / associates is again very very essential to entire virtuous cycle of HR / ER management. Ensuring sincere close looping for long time would result in a very strong bond and connect between employer and employees and is always a great indicator of a great culture !!!

Unfortunately in my personal experience firms love the idea but rarely implement any suggestions. It’s like you’re telling them not everything isn’t peachy with the company.

I prioritize open communication channels and create a safe and non-judgmental environment. I employ various methods such as anonymous surveys, regular one-on-one meetings, and feedback sessions to encourage honest and constructive input. I actively listen to their concerns, validate their perspectives, and take actionable steps to address any issues raised. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of feedback in driving positive change and continuously seek opportunities to improve our feedback mechanisms based on employee input.

Being sure that you are operating with integrity and taking action (if needed) when provided feedback from staff. This will promote more honest feedback through various channels. You will earn the respect of your people/teams when you listen to their voice, in a non-judgemental and open way. On those occasions when feedback requires simply your acknowledgement, then make sure there is a response of some sort. Feedback that goes without acknowledgement puts your culture into a black hole.
