Se debe de ser una persona paciente, amante del detalle y cuidado, calidad, pero no solo eso, el conocimiento de la historia de la moda y la pasión por ella, hará de ti un gran profesional en el sector del lujo. One thing I have found very helpful is to spend time with the materials before I design with them. I must say that I was designing Couture accessories, not clothing, including jewelry, headpieces, and veils sold around the world in exclusive salons and designer studios. I also especially enjoyed the custom design client. I realize that it’s backwards from what most people do. With a solid understanding of these principles, your designs are less likely to fail. While innovation is essential, effective innovation requires knowing your true limitations and possibilities. The only way to elevate your skills is by being a master of the basics. In my experience, design rules are meant to be broken, but this is only possible after rigorous training in the fundamentals.

As a fashion designer, one should regularly be practicing various techniques howsoever. One should get out of the comfort zone and try new ideas to practice multiple techniques. 'Thrift-flip' is a very good idea to practice and refine your technical skills.

Draping is an art form. Learning to drape is an opportunity to create from scratch. Deciding how exactly to manipulate the fabric to create the perfect fit is the epitome of custom. Finding the right fabrics to use is fore-knowledge of basics. Knowing texture, fabric resilience, fabric capacity and capability allow for manipulation. Although certain fabrics have industry end uses. You don’t have to follow that rule in draping. It is when you fully understand draping as a playground for endless creativity. One can embark on the journey to see possibilities in almost any type of fabric. Because fashion is a form of expression that the designers narrative belongs exclusively to them. It’s the designers job to convince the work the look works.

Una de las experiencias que yo recomendaría sería ir a tiendas de segunda mano y comprar prendas de alta costura o de calidad como mínimo. Estudiar como están echas las prendas y repetirlas es un gran valor que a?adir al aprendizaje sobre costura y patronaje.

Couture is a unique style of fashion that tends to misunderstood. It truly is about craftsmanship and how the greats designed exclusive looks and created designed by hand crafting many looks over countless hours of beading, stitching, or studding a garment to stand alone on the runway. To know couture more one has to study the history of those who have gone where many of us are going. It may take many hours, days, or weeks to complete a garment. I recommend attending every fashion exhibit you can. You should also visit high end department stores where you can study the insides of various garments-treat it like a visit to the museum, but with more freedom to touch and explore. Just remember to tell the sales associates you don’t need any help because you are studying. Finally, get yourself some good books! There are hundreds of books about fabric properties, sewing techniques, pattern drafting, etc. Finally, don’t be afraid to fail! It’s just more data from which you can learn and grow.

In my experience it is important to understand fine fabrics. Know the fiber content {for ex. 100% silk, or a blend}. Having knowledge of pattern making, and draping. This is important to keep fabric waste to a minimum. Learn different methods of hand sewing , to attach delicate closures. Be creative with your designs!!

El proceso es largo, pero muy enriquecedor. Un gran dise?ador de alta costura, debe de tener tanta experiencia como pueda. Si quieres aprender, aconsejo disfrutar de cada resultado y mejorar en cada proceso que se haga. Desarrolla un proyecto, al terminarlo enfócate en corregir detalles o apuntarlos para que en el siguiente no se olviden esas mejoras.

In my perspective i will always look into details to define finest couture. Closures such as zippers, buttons, and hooks are another essential component of garment finishes. These elements must be chosen and applied with care to ensure they complement the design and function seamlessly. An invisible zipper, for instance, should be inserted with precision so that it remains truly invisible, preserving the garment's clean lines. Buttons should be securely attached and matched to the fabric and style of the garment, adding both functional and decorative value. The quality of closures also impacts the overall usability of the garment.

I live by the rule, “Never stop at what you have achieved, even if you believe that your creative voice is stronger than ever.” I made this mistake 6 years ago and saw a noticeable decline in the quality of my pieces. Stagnation is the worst thing that can happen to an artist. Personally, I find Pinterest quite helpful in my search for ideas. I have quite a lot of boards with dozens of sections; classifying pics by material, colour, movement, etc. helps a lot, especially when I have to explain something to a client using visual examples. If you’re more old-school, going places with a sketchbook is also a great idea. Being constantly exposed to new things will eventually broaden your horizons and bring your practice to the next level :)
