For Project Managers this should be something you are doing just to track your projects regardless status to your PMO. Your PMO should have standards (including milestones)for all projects to report and track. Why? As a PMO Director I have to track typically over 300 + projects and sub projects. This can only be done programmatically. Either with a PMO ERP or via scripts (I usually write my own) In any case keep in mind a good program manager and PMO Director is calculating the health and status of those standard milestones regardless of project type. Thier calculations and yours should match. Advise ask how they are calculating the health and status and what they look for. My PMs were always surprised at what I looked at vs them.

Wins are important, toot your own horn they say. However, remember to also admit mistakes and do not try to cover them up. As a Project Manager you always take one for your team. Why? Pointing blame always weakens teams and creates a competitive environment. Competition is good for business, BAD for Project Teams. Teams succeed and fail together. No one person is ever responsible, even if you are afraid of being fired.
