Scheduling tools help immensely. These tools help build visual, collab tools with metrics. The important piece is to not just rely on tools, you need to actively communicate progress based on data. Tools can only do so much, you need to actively manage them. Do you agree?

Good SEs are skilled at making trade-offs between all project requirements, so as to keep the "Cost of Change" down (whereby "Cost" might be relative to any of the project constraints - Schedule / Resources / Scope / Requirements / Costs). This means making necessary changes as soon as possible. To do so, one needs to understand the various viable trade-offs, determining (based on the relative priorities of the constraints) which corrective action(s) are most appropriate.

Another way I have found very helpful to keep projects, especially long-term ones, on track, is to actively search for opportunities as they may arise within the project activities and related events.

Risk, Issue, and Opportunity management is important to understand potential risks that may evolve on your program or projects. Risks that are identified early enough may need to be mitigated if they have the potential to have a substantial impact on the program. Other times the resources of the program are such that the risk must be accepted as you move forward. Often unmitigated risks will evolve into issues that now need to be addressed with some sort of mitigation or replanning. While you cannot always mitigate the potential risks to execution – technical, cost, or schedule – understanding what may occur, will often improve your response when issues arise on the program.

Having a solid communication plan is essential to prevent the project from facing numerous obstacles and getting derailed. I have witnessed numerous instances like - Requirements that are delayed or not met can set the project back significantly. -lack of ability to make decisions -doublicated efforts

Systems engineering by default comes with essence of project management. During execution of the project it is mandatory have a solid communication plan. The basis it to have the whole bunch of stakeholders aligned on the progress allowing the team to converge towards the development objective. Lack of a communication plan can result the development trajectory to vary off from the path towards objective. A solid regular communication plan helps as a check control that allows all stakeholders to reflect kn the progress and feedback about the next steps

You need a communication strategy first, then a plan to execute the strategy. The strategy identifies your audiences/stakeholders and their motivations. It defines the narrative, the key messages and proof points. Most projects underestimate the effort required to deliver and manage communications effectively and, in my experience, poor communications and lack of engagement can seriously derail a project.
