My response, when asked this question, included the following information. Each answer was dependent on the job I was currently seeking, but the answer always included the following: "What is a typical career path in your organization for someone with my skill set and experiences?" or "Where do you see my experience making the most significant impact on your organization as it grows?" Based on the response of the interviewer, I would assure them I would be an excellent contributor to their vision/goals. It worked!!!!

Of course you will have researched the company online and by networking with people in it. Having done that, you will surely have ended your Tell Me About Yourself question with, "...and that's me. Maybe if you tell me your priorities for the person who fills the position, I can give you relevant examples?" The answer to that will inform you on the points where you have alignment with your interviewer's current objectives (and the company's). Using your STAR stories with measurable results, you'll offer evidence of your abilities. Following up with a Thank You note stressing those examples as proof of your alignment will reinforce your interview. Also it will make you more memorable, since many candidates skip this step.

Flexibility is key. Focus your response on what you will do, rather than on a specific position or role, because if you think about it, stating any position you expect to have in 5 years would be a misguided response. Something too aggressive might make the recruiter think you are a bit presumptuous and arrogant, while something too conservative could lead them to question your confidence and abilities. In any case, a very specific and concrete answer is not the best approach. Talk about the skills you intend to develop in the next 5 years, thus showing your proactive nature and willingness to learn new things about the company and the industry.
