If you feel that the feedback you received was too harsh, reacting emotionally can only worsen the dynamic of the conversation. Be clear in communicating what you feel after hearing the negative feedback to your superior. For Example:" I really care about your opinion on XYZ considering your position and experience, and this negative feedback has crushed my confidence and made me lose motivation. Could you suggest what improvements I can make in order to complete this efficiently?" Communicating this way helps you gain control of the conversation and you can also get tips to learn and improvise.

When receiving negative feedback, do not go on the defensive, by all means ask questions to help you understand the comments but do it calmly and professionally. Also use it to make positive progression, we have all become stagnant at some point and need a reality check, take the advice and make best use of it, use what the company offers to improve these points in terms of training /development and don’t be embarrassed to ask seniors for a bit of coaching or mentoring, it will improve you in your personal growth and professional growth . Take a step back , take a breath and go again with the feed back in mind .

This has worked for me and I am sharing it as one way to be able to receive and respond to your superior’s criticism. The method is, to psych yourself that whatever criticism that comes from your Boss is from a place of goodwill for you. That way, you will be ready to listen and consider everything no matter the manner in which they were delivered. ? Give him all the attention and node in agreement where necessary ? Let everything sink in and thank him after he is done. ? You can always get a good opportunity to prove his/her claims otherwise. Do not explain yourself immediately. Unless he/she demands an explanation. ? Do well not make your boss repeat him/herself on the same thing. These have worked for me. Thank you!
