Resistance to change is often rooted in fear and uncertainty. To manage it effectively you need to; 1/ Understand the underlying reasons and engage with the team to address their concerns. 2/ Communicate clearly about the benefits of change and how it will impact individuals. 3/ Foster transparency, build trust, and involve team members in the process. 4/ Provide support and celebrate successes to create a positive and supportive environment. By following these strategies, leaders can effectively manage resistance to change, minimize disruptions, and turn it into an opportunity for growth and improvement.

Understand why resistance is generated - this is always the starting point. Meet key stakeholders. Go prepared. Empathize. Use frank, open, safe, non judgemental mechanisms to elicit as much response as possible. Ask lots of open ended questions. Cover every area .. nothing is trivial. Focus on the emotional undercurrents. If you know them well, read between the lines a bit and be sensitive to choice of words, tone and body language. Resistance is a slippery chameleon when it comes to uncovering reasons for it. Not everyone has the confidence to open up fully. But at the same time it is critical to get that input. Leave no stone unturned.

When confronted with a challenge, problem, or situation that pushes you out of your comfort zone, altering your inner attitude can assist in overcoming the associated uncertainty. Consider your skills and abilities as muscles that require constant training to successfully overcome challenges.Seek out opportunities that will enable you to gain the necessary skills, always maintaining the mindset of "I can't do it yet" rather than "I just can't do it."

Here are a few magic words that need no explanation in the context of this question: - Being Proactive - Being Available - Solution-Oriented Mindset - Produce high-quality deliverables, on time - Keep all stakeholders well-informed - Raise red flags on time - Constantly seek feedback to improve your work - Build a strong network by being friendly

By articulating information transparently and consistently, you ensure that everyone understands the reasons behind the change, its implications, and their roles in the process. Clear communication fosters trust, reduces uncertainty, and minimizes resistance among colleagues. Moreover, it facilitates open dialogue, allowing for feedback, questions, and concerns to be addressed promptly. As a result, clear communication enables temporary and contract workers to adapt more readily, collaborate more effectively, and contribute to the success of the organization during times of change.

Consider communicating the change to leaders first. Ensure they are well versed in the reasons for the change, the benefits, and their role in the change. Provide an opportunity for leaders to ask questions and gain clarity before a broader communication. When employees struggle with change, the first person they ask is their leader. By equipping leaders up front, they have time to understand the change and present it to their teams in the most positive light.

Also pay attention to what is not being said. Silence or lack of response is delivering a message too, very often in change management related as lack of interest in the change. Develop a relevant communication plan with a tracking of engagement response, even on negative response or resistance, since that will give you insights to work towards adoption.

Very often, this is the missing ingredient in the magic sauce to landing change - support. Often, people are left to their own devices and means, in an environment of pressure and scrutiny, and they feel more stressed, anxious, worried and insecure. Exactly the opposite of the headspace they need to be in for accepting and embracing change or even better, even contributing to it. It is amazing just how well people respond to the offer of support, if genuine. Ask them what help is needed .. add to it with your perspective if it helps. Then follow through.

Too often we see coachs and support offered to Business leaders by coaching. Although coaching is a key tool for any leader and organization, sometimes to go through change we need a deeper conection, close and who is not afraid to teach by doing. By example we lead and inspire, always keeping accountability on the responsible but offering a closer and supportive leadership that is ready to go hands on when needed.

By offering assistance, resources, and guidance, organizations can help these workers adapt to new roles, processes, and systems. This support can take various forms, such as training sessions, mentorship programs, access to relevant tools and information, and emotional support during challenging transitions. Providing support not only enhances the performance and morale of temporary and contract workers but also fosters a sense of belonging and loyalty toward the organization. Ultimately, by investing in the well-being and success of these workers, organizations can maximize their contributions and minimize disruptions during periods of change.

There is no one solution for everyone. I have found that empathy is a key skill to reach everyone at their level and this has shown positive results in embracing change.

This is a critical step that is often overlooked. Be sure to budget the time and resources to adequately support the change. Spend some time in the planning phase understanding the impact on various departments. Use that analysis to design a support plan that is more comprehensive for deeply impacted teams.

Empower leaders by coaching them. Leverage all your expertise and creative abilities to discuss with them formally and informally, and drive home the importance of role modelling, leading the way, being inspirational, communicating strongly and transparently, winning trust by genuinely reaching out to people and walking the talk. Coach then on communication structure, emotional impact and facilitation so they themselves can be ambassadors and facilitators of the change. Leaders will make the biggest impact on any change program because everyone watches them, learns from them and focuses on their words and actions.

By identifying individuals who demonstrate leadership qualities—such as initiative, problem-solving skills, and the ability to motivate others—organizations can delegate responsibilities and decision-making authority to them. Empowered leaders can then play a crucial role in guiding their peers through the transition, providing support, sharing knowledge, and encouraging collaboration. Moreover, empowering leaders among temporary and contract workers not only strengthens the overall team dynamics but also helps distribute leadership responsibilities more evenly, reducing the burden on permanent staff.

The other strategic approach is to identify key influencers with significant experience who will serve as change champions. By positioning these individuals to exhibit the changed behaviors, values, and mindsets, the other workers will be able to receive the correct information on how to adapt. The change champion's attitude toward the change will boost enthusiasm and limit resistance since the workers will have few reasons to comply with the change. Reflecting on my tenure as a change management leader, the work management burden will be reduced significantly since the change champions will transfer the information to the other workers.

The quintessential "what's in it for me?". Well you'd think most people want material gain in return for the support they provide to the change program. And you'd likely be wrong. It is a well known fact that in many employee engagement surveys, people overwhelmingly prefer public recognition for their work to a cash reward. This is because they tie it to their self esteem, and rightly so. They know it will count in the long run, create strong positive perception and build professional equity for them within the org. So yes, reward efforts creatively, in multiple ways, publicly and give contributors the limelight.

In the New World Kirkpatrick Model of Training Evaluation, the third stage of evaluating training, Behavior, puts training into practice and part of the culture. Leaders do this through on-the-job training, monitoring performance, encouraging and empowering workers, reinforcing positive behaviors, and rewarding those behaviors. While contingent rewards falls under the category of "transactional leadership," they clearly send a message that things have moved in a positive direction. Similarly, change, which often involves a significant element of training to teach new ways of doing things and a new company culture in many cases, can benefit from the same elements of reinforcement, on-the-job training, encouragement, and rewards.

By recognizing and acknowledging the contributions of these workers, organizations can reinforce positive behaviors, foster a sense of appreciation, and boost morale. Rewards can take various forms, such as verbal praise, bonuses, promotions, or opportunities for career advancement. By aligning rewards with desired outcomes and performance metrics, organizations incentivize temporary and contract workers to actively engage in the change process, adapt quickly, and contribute to the achievement of organizational goals. Moreover, rewarding efforts sends a clear message that their contributions are valued and integral to the success of the organization, thereby increasing their sense of ownership and loyalty.

The word "manage" implies that we can plan for, direct and control change. Experience tells us that while we may plan, we may direct some aspects of change, we can not presume to control reactions to change. Change is by nature disruptive. Be prepared to explain why change is happening, provide support and remain firm in your conviction. Listen to concerns and tweak details to address issues that arise to build confidence but be aware that acceptance will not be universal.

I want to add “Visibility of Early Wins” Help champions identify and communicate early successes of the change initiative, no matter how small. Sharing these wins helps to build momentum and demonstrate the benefits of the change, making it easier for others to buy into the vision. This could be achieved by ensuring you have a baseline prior to the change then show the improvements since initiating the change. A visual representation always helps people get excited and support the change even more.

Managing resistance to change involves clear communication, active listening, and involving team members in the change process. Communicate the benefits and rationale behind the change, addressing concerns transparently. Foster a culture of trust by seeking feedback and showing empathy towards employees' apprehensions. Provide training and resources to ease the transition. To boost your promotion prospects, demonstrate leadership by effectively managing these changes, showcasing problem-solving skills, and maintaining a positive attitude. Consistently exceed performance expectations, take on additional responsibilities, and build strong relationships within the organization.
