Here's how you can effectively handle remote teams as a public administrator.

The right tools to help sharing information in real time are fundamental to succeed in managing remote teams , but, it’s even more important to be prepared as a manager to help your team in taking full advantage of the tools , so train yourself as deep as possible before using the tools… This will also help you to create more confidence about yourself as a manager in your team .

In my experience handling remote teams, the first thing is to become familiar with Tech. During the pandemic, I led remote teams and had to master virtual meeting tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Slack. One memorable experience was organizing a major event advocating for education online. We had to quickly learn these tools to guide our teams effectively and ensure the success of our virtual gathering.

Clear Communication: Regular updates and transparent dialogue. Use of Technology: Employ project management and collaboration tools. Flexibility and Trust: Allow flexible hours and trust your team. Regular Check-Ins: Frequent one-on-one and team meetings. Foster Team Culture: Encourage virtual social activities. Provide Support: Offer training and necessary resources. Set Clear Goals: Define objectives and track progress. Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage healthy boundaries.

Set up clear objectives, clear quality standards and clear deadlines, without micro-managing people's natural talent (that meaning without alienating their creativity peaks, in Time). Respect the nature of (subjective) Time and allow sufficient freedom to creative solutions.

Dovetail technology in the reporting and compliance. Have robust SOPs. Carry out surprise checks at periodic intervals to not allow complacency to set in.

Have an open channel for clear communication and a continuous flow of information should be available to teams. Flexibility when setting meetings

When working with virtual teams, you need to start with a “trust” mindset. It shouldn’t matter if staff is in the cube next to you or working from home in their bunny slippers. We assemble teams we must trust to understand the job, attend to deadlines and deliverables, and get the work done. With a virtual team, it is the outcome that matters, not the process. Assuming you provide all the technology needed to keep the team engaged, and you are leading in ways the team seeks, you will be successful. It’s all about regular engagement, clear expectations, and results results results.

Giving support to your team as a public administrator will promote inclusion. Have a One on one interaction to provide feedbacks to address areas of concerns and also give recognition timely as this will improve work performance.
