One thing that works for me is always to be armed with my paper notes for back up if I'm unable to share my presentation despite all effort.

Staying in a Well Lighted Place always does the magic for me, so my Audience can see me very well. I also try to put a smile on my face, because my facial expression passes information to my Audience, but the most important weapon I use is my Jotter, tucked in by my side to always read from. But why not grab some software like Vimeo, descipt, loom, or just QuickTime and hit record? At first, it'll feel unnatural but you'll soon discover what works, feel the flow, and refine every vocal line. In the end, you could even end up with a nice recording you can give your audience: which is vital for audience members with sensory, physical, and language differences!

To make the best impression, you need to be confident, and that comes from your mastery over the material and the setting. Practice runs thus are crucial. Making detailed scripts for yourself, and practicing the transitions from one point to another, can ease a lot of anxieties. As you gain mastery over the material and get comfortable with the virtual platform's tools and settings, you will be able to keep calm, and handle any situation during the presentation, be they technical issues, or sudden questions that break your flow.

I have a slightly different take on this - particularly for senior people who tend to come pre-packed with a great deal of knowledge, experience and authority. What do we call people who can learn and deliver spoken material, again and again, whilst sounding charismatic and natural. We call them actors. Before you drill your performance until you could deliver it with your eyes shut, ask yourself if your audience are going be inspired by and truly connect with you and your rehearsed message. Ask yourself if you have the skills of a great actor. If not, maybe you need to trust yourself, and all the things that you know, to come out in a natural and relaxed fashion (assisted by brief notes if you wish) when you are "on your feet".

Research has identified the number 10 (as in minutes) as the death row of audience attention. The primary cause of this is connection. It is a very fearful thing for many of us to reveal a transparent, vulnerable and authentic self for fear of being found out. So what. BE YOU. Get found out or tell them first. I vote for telling them first. Many will thank you but as soon as you connect, you'll know because they'll lean in or sit back more comfortably and curious. They'll stick around for the long haul because you've opened up the safe place to be curious and explore your topic together. You're no longer the expert but you become a trusted guide when people connect with you and not just your story.

Personal connections are key. Why should your audience want to listen to what you have to say. Make them feel as though you are genuinely invested.

Effective Communication is hard, over virtual platforms it can be harded. If you don't think you are able to present while sitting in front of a screen, know that nothing holds you back from standing up and presenting like in-person events. If possible even get a friend to be audience in the room. Just set up the camera accordingly, along with a lapel microphone and a wireless presenter, so that audience can still see you and your slides, and hear you well. You may be surprised how effective it turns out, since following your own path can boost confidence and help alleviate anxieties. Just be prepared to handle the additional instruments.
