Here's how you can effectively convey your expectations to students as a teacher.

As a teacher, always keep in mind the target population of the knowledge you want to transmit. Andragogy, a pedagogical method adapted for adults in education, demands a clear expression of the purpose of the content transmitted, thus increasing interest and adherence on the part of students.

As a teacher, one of the best ways to get students to take you seriously is through unwavering consistency. You have to display the same level of assertiveness and follow-through with your expectations, day in and day out. Hold all students accountable to the same rules and requirements. This shows you're fair, reliable, and committed to upholding high standards. When you allow some to skirt the expectations while disciplining others, it breeds resentment and erodes your credibility. Although enforcing your expectations isn't always easy, it's essential for effective classroom management. When students know what's expected and that those expectations won't change, they're much more likely to step up and meet them.

As a teacher you have to give these expectation in terms of action if you are expecting something from your student how does that look like in action? Example- If you want student to respect Each Other How does that look like an action? A- using respectful language B- respecting someone's opinion.

Craft expectations from a place of proactivity and collaboration. This can allow for further clarity and buy-in. Every group of learners is different, so what was a necessary expectation for one group may stifle or not provide necessary structure for the next. So, what does it look like to say, "We need to achieve X together, what do we need to do to make that happen?" instead of setting expectations by saying: "Don't do..." (Because then we may hear: Ok, then what do I do?) Or "This must be done this way" (We may hear: I can't learn that way.) Or "My last cohort did X last year, so I don't want to see any of that." (Then we rightfully may hear: But we're not them.) Be clear about the goals, and try building expectations together.

Clarity is paramount in my classroom. My students should have a crystal-clear understanding of what is expected of them. This means articulating rules, objectives, and academic standards straightforwardly. Avoiding ambiguity, I use specific language and examples to convey my expectations. For instance, rather than saying "participate more," I define what active participation looks like: raising hands, contributing to discussions, and working collaboratively in groups. By being clear, I help students visualize the behavior and performance I expect, fostering an environment where they can thrive and succeed.

As a teacher, I believe it's crucial to not only set expectations but also to embody them. For instance, if we expect our students to respect each other, we must demonstrate respect towards our colleagues as well. Students are highly observant; they learn significantly from our actions, perhaps even more than from our words. Therefore, it's essential to consistently model the behaviors we wish to instill in them.
