It’s imperative that your boss knows your career goals and a good one will have already asked you. If they have not, use every opportunity you have to convey them. For instance, never let an annual review process end without discussing your goals, discuss your goals when a new project is presented, when you’re asked to take on more responsibility or when a milestone is met. Things change and keeping your boss aware of where you want to be one day is critical if you want to get there.
