Here's how you can effectively convey the importance of safety protocols in a laboratory setting.

One thing I’ve found that is most important when conducting a training is knowing your audience. Your training should be tailored to your audience and how it is beneficial information to them. Avoid reading off of slides and engage the audience.

In this section, we have two parts , constant protocols and flexible protocols. Some of rules should be constant in each situation for example in emergency times. But sometimes we need to change some of protocols to be update and we need to progress in some ways. Here we enter to flexible protocols. I think education have more rules and effect in this part, because you need to walk in edge of science to be more safe.

Additionally, introducing obligatory certification of safety can enhance adherence to protocols. Regular refreshers and updates on new protocols are crucial to keep everyone informed and ensure ongoing compliance with safety standards.

If your team conducts meeting to discuss schedules work sometimes having a dedicated day such as during a daily morning meeting can re-enforce the messages to be communicated and if any actions are generated from discussions be sure to follow this up with communicating the actions. Things like near misses and how reporting this has changed an environmental condition or process is an example. If you have a communicate or action that has resulted in a process improvement be sure to celebrate this with your team and recognise colleagues who have engaged in the discussion. This creates a “safety culture” within your team but the key is maintaining it.

I totally agree with this point... Visual reminders are very important and serves as constant reminder to the scientists and technicians

Visual cues are important in a lab setting yes. However be wary of how colleagues become accustomed to these in their environment. Over time complacency can become present and signs can be overlooked no matter how big or colourful these are due to employees becoming more familiar seeing them every day. I’ve found moving these signs slightly has a bigger impact on awareness of surroundings to others in the workplace and generates discussion amongst colleagues. “Did you notice that fire signage has been moved lower recently?”, “Have you noticed the access control sign has been updated lately changing colour?, never realised hearing protection was recommended here”, few recent examples. Also KEEP IT SIMPLE! No novels on any signage.

Rewarding a positive health and safety culture can be encouraging for promoting things like near misses, good saves and safety concerns that lead to actions. However there needs to be a balance on set criteria or so you risk the quality of reporting being performed. If incentives are easy to obtain (financial ones for example) could lead to a huge loss and encourage over promotion of reporting that isn’t actually meaningful or has any scope for bigger improvement projects. Incentives are a plus for certain but criteria and boundaries need set to ensure the quality of what is produced has lasting impact. Reminders of incentives should also be encouraged amongst colleagues as it’s easy to forget if it’s a busy day and someone was a hero.
