The true value of an OR professional lies in building value for businesses through deep technical thinking However businesses are composed of professionals who are divided by their expertise but joined in their pursuit of a common goal. Hence even if you're an expert in your field of study - you always need to be able to explain your thoughts in the context of the larger goal of your organization The above statement is even more true for fields of study requiring academic rigor such as OR where many methods can be somewhat counter intuitive to understand (who doesn't remember Monty Hall from their first year Probability class). Story telling plays a huge role in ensuring that your solutions are feasible and sustainable post deployment

There are business world examples and even quotes from famous people such as Henry Ford: "If I have asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses!" that basically dismantle the shortcomings in vision and criteria in what really needs to be optimized. Kodak wanted to be the leader in color printing and then digital photos were the trend, Blockbuster was acquiring more stores when Netflix appeared. Operations Research has to be a tool utilized in the right and relevant things. Story telling should include business cases where the wrong thing got optimized. I recommend a book from Ron Adner, a strategy professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth called "Winning the Right Game" to learn more about this.
