Here's how you can effectively communicate with senior executives as a sustainability professional.

Clear, succinct communication is key to success as a sustainability professional. What's common to senior executives across sectors and geographies? That they are busy, shuttling between meetings on various topics in the course of any given day and making decisions. As business/ profits with purpose takes center stage in boardrooms across the globe, sustainability professionals should look at understanding the core purpose of the business/ company and identifying relevant sustainability goals for their organization. Cost saving initiatives are quick wins. Long term behaviour change measures can be hard to quantify, measure or report progress on. Keep it real, provide data from peers and industry trends, show what good looks like.

Sustainability is moving away from disclosures to performance improvement and more towards value creation. The executives are keen to understand how they can get tangible and measurable results

Knowing the audience is an important taks in any conversation, however in the case of sustainability I still believe that there are many limiting beliefs, so to speak, an example is the definition of activities and projects involving socio-environmental issues as expenses rather than investments. When characterized as expenses, they become just a requirement for the company to operate, they do not generate a direct return, however when it is defined as an investment it is expected that it will provide value, generate profit or direct or indirect return. So it's the ability to show that sustainability is an investment, and structuring it that way, seems to me to be the appropriate language for Senior Leaders.

This involves identifying key stakeholders, understanding their priorities and communication styles, researching company policies and culture, and leveraging both internal and external resources. Tailor your message to align with business goals, emphasize quantifiable benefits, anticipate objections, and engage in interactive discussions. This approach ensures your sustainability initiatives resonate with executives and support the company's strategic objectives.

Speaking the language of senior leaders is an important skill that will substantially improve the impact of your conversations. Senior leaders are responsible for the business results of the organization. That means financial aspects are very important to them and they have a deep understanding of these. Using financial terms to communicate your ideas is critical to help them quickly grasp the benefits to the organization. Also, understanding what their organization does and how they do it is important. Using terms that are relevant to their operations more effectively communicates the benefit sustainability principles will bring to their business. You have to speak the language to be heard!

Present solutions that are realistic for the business and impactful to their ongoing mission. It is so easy for sustainability leaders to get caught up in the good of what could be done when in fact, the business must have solutions that are focused on their capabilities and their stakeholder expectations. You can’t solve it all! Find what is achievable and impactful for your business and your community. In the past, I’ve been coached: “think global, but act local”.

Senior leadership always looks out for the right collaboration who can take them ahead of the competition, doing things differently with an impact and purpose. Additionally, quantifying impact of these successes outline the tangible benefits achieved. It helps build confidence and rapport at the senior level that the prospective partner understands the business goals and ambitions, associated risks involved, and will work together as a team in achieving the vision and the outcome.

Outline action items with timelines and responsibilities 4.
