Risk analysis is the process of identifying and analyzing potential future events that may adversely impact a company. A company performs risk analysis to better understand what may occur, the financial implications of that event occurring, and what steps it can take to mitigate or eliminate that risk.

One thing I've found helpful is to use a FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) template to really understand where the high risk processes are in a company. This tool will provide a Risk Priority Number, and tackling high RPN's is vital to ensuring your risk is managed.

As a finance professional, it's easy to get sucked into the busy work of the role. Specifically, updating reporting and sending them out can drain significant capacity. Worse, it'll keep you from adding value in ways that only finance can - interpreting the report, analyzing the results, and communicating the actions needed to improve the business. By leveraging technology and process automation to eliminate or reduce the manual finance work, you can put yourself in a better position to drive value in the company you support.

Automation is one of the most important tools in the finance world. We work with hundreds of thousands of rows of data and we cannot check every row for accuracy. Automatic error checking and checksums are vital to balancing. And contrary to what people have said for the past 20+ years. VBA isn't going away. And can solve complex tasks over and above what even Power Query can do. Power Query has provided a quicker way to manipulate table data, transforming data is the main thing it's good at.

My favorite way to improve a culture of continuous development is to create a healthy spirit of competition within finance. For example, early in my career we used to all compete for a little plastic trophy - whoever had the most accurate forecast each month would win the trophy. It's silly and small, but meant a lot to know that your forecast performed the best that month.
