En mi opinión, cuando eres proficiente en una de las ramas, muchas de las habilidades que has ido adquiriendo son fácilmente transportables a la otra rama a excepción del conocimiento técnico que debes aprender constantemente para mantenerte al día. Si tomáramos en cuenta el enfoque de la ciberseguridad, podríamos diferenciar claramente algunos aspectos entre ambas carreras. Es imprescindible aclarar que en ambos casos se tienen que tener conocimientos de seguridad específicos que permitan implementar controles en un esfuerzo de proteger uno de los activos más importantes hoy día; la información, sin embargo, desde la perspectiva de la ingeniería de software es mucho más amplio el margen o la superficie de ataque que tienes que considerar, pues no basta con proteger la información desde el código fuente, si no también en la interfaz de usuario, desde las integraciones y consumo de servicios, entorno de ejecución, sesiones de usuario, cadena de suministros y dependencias externas.
