Avoid bringing it up at the start of the interview.

As an HR head, it's offensive on employers side to focus on the salary or benefits instead of discussion your background during the interview. Salary is important to the job hunter, but always remember to sell yourself first by discussing about why the company hire you. Think about buying something, as a customer you always check the quality of a product before you pay for it. The best thing for you to do is to wait for the employer to discuss about the salary. The employer will surely discuss about it.

You can give a range, understand what the company can offer etc but be clear on what you are looking for and be able to communicate it back to the team so that they can work to check if that aligns with their numbers or not. As you progress in the conversation, you will be able to mutual negotiate and agree on suitable numbers.

As a job seeker, one must be attentive to inputs on these aspects and seek information if it is not volunteered. Many a times, HR representatives package the compensation along with these attractive work policies, cultural aspects and incentive policies. If you pay attention and take in consideration these aspects, you may want to be open to discussing a mutually beneficial solution.

One thing I've found helpful is to understand the role you are going in for, the skills and values you would be bringing in and the capacity of the company. These three things would help you align yourself in a way that you don't sell yourself short or too high. Professionally, you should place a Value on your experience, skills, trainings acquired and have a benchmark for what you are worth. Then have a flexible range with a lower limit that you can't go below. These certain factors can be considered, while determing how flexible you can be in your salary choice as a new applicant, the exposures, experiences or skillsets the new role/company/industry affords.

Think about the type of lifestyle you want and the things that can be beneficial. Other than compensation, think about negotiating your work hours, PTO, professional development, job title, relocation allowances, travel opportunities or your bonus.
