Do the right thing. Embracing tech doesn’t mean going all in on a virtual world. Find ways to “see” each other. Trust, respect, and teamwork come through those that are familiar. It’s been proven that seeing someone helps reinforce values like compassion, integrity, and humbleness. Video platforms are a great way to ensure these things happen as much as possible in a virtual world.

In today's remote world, my laptop is practically my co-pilot. From mastering video calls to wrangling projects with online tools and keeping everyone on the same page in shared workspaces, I'm all in. It's not just about the tech though – it shows my team I can navigate the digital world with confidence, which I believe is a must-have skill for any modern leader.

In many ways, leading in remote environments isn't much different than leading when in the same physical space. Keys include: - Create a clear vision & a shared definition of success at all levels - Build/sustain a feedback-rich environment - Align rewards, recognition, and consequences with expectations - Ensure people have access to the resources required to thrive in their roles All of that said, there are nuances in a remote environment. Leaders need to: - Co-create guiding principles of the digital culture (zoom meeting protocols; cameras on? backgrounds blurred? - Establish how to create psych safety and environments where people engage, speak up, and collaborate Deliberate intent and consistency will support sustained success.

Three decades ago, there was no Internet in towns in India and similar other countries. No technology, except wired phones and fax machines. Leadership then also had challenges, which increased tremandously now in the age of Internet, trying to manage remote teams through technology. I saw a manager happy and smiling while talking to a team member online using MS Team app. With the video off, the person on the other end was not able to see the smile or happiness of the manager. The body language remains non-communicated, leaving the other person in assumption whether the manager is happy, upset or something else. This biggest barrier can be overcome by verbally expressing your emotions. Learning technology along with EQ is the solution.

Cognitive skills are very important. In order for an organization to succeed in remote work, its leader must possess the skills of influence, organization, and communication, along with the ability to solve problems that may arise as a result of the challenges present in remote work environments.

One might thought that communicating clearly requires complex communication skills and sometimes forget that some basic stuff can add real value to the mix. Communicating properly requires proper hardware. Trust me, when you're communicating through zoom calls you want to make sure your voice doesn't come out with delays, that people can hear you loud and clear without background noises, eco, etc. You also need to make sure people can see you just as if you were connecting in person, have your camera properly set so it faces you and people can see your face reactions and body language. No need to reinvent the wheel, make sure you're doing the basic, and doing it right.

In leadership, clear communication is key. Make sure everyone understands the goals and expectations, and take time to hear your team's challenges. Remember, if everything feels urgent, nothing truly is. Prioritize tasks to focus on what really matters, nurturing a productive and connected team.

Setting up targets is probably the most effective way to build skills up in an individual. Goals not only make the person accountable in front of themselves but also enables them to practice in working within a specified time frame thus helping them explore their potential. Effective communication is the key that fosters team work and collaboration in a remote work environment whereas micromanagement is a mal-practice. And the goals and the KPIs you give to your remote team need to be well explained as well.

Even more importantly in this context, providing purpose and deep, reinforcing understanding of the WHY - why this team exists, why your role exists, why the strategy/plan is important. That way, it better holds a remote team's collective performance to WHAT you're aiming to achieve and HOW you get there.

The mother and the father of a good meeting (particularly if virtual) are the objective and the method. In a virtual environment, it's often common to lose track of these parents because everything becomes a Meet/Zoom/Teams call. Nevertheless, it's even more important in a virtual environment to not lose track of objective & method because it helps to identify useful vs not useful meetings and to reduce stress due to back-to-back meetings with no clear objectives and no decisions taken.

Here are key considerations: - Discipline your own schedule: Set a consistent schedule and stick to it to demonstrate commitment to the team's success - Meet deadlines: Ensure timely completion of tasks to maintain trust and credibility - Be available: Keep your team informed about your availability and respond promptly to their queries

Your team will know, if you're out there extolling the virtues of MS Teams, Zoom, IM's, etc., or how it builds cohesion to have cameras on during meetings, then you have to set the example. If your camera is always off, or you only call to ask things, the message it sends is loud and clear. Leading from the front should be in all things, not a selective few. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you're above that now. It's a slippery slope.

My own approach to be effective as a remote leader: - establish clear working hours, - keep your calendar up to date, - show your current status properly, - inform others if you can not attend a meeting beforehand, - always get back to people if they are reaching you. even if you don’t have a proper answer right now, respond that you need more time to provide an answer, - when reaching others, explain your request in one message, so the person can respond when it is suitable, - be proactive and respective to other’s time!

One of the enemies of successful leadership is dictatorship and lack of empathy. a subordinate cannot view his boss well if he is tyrannical and does not take into consideration the employee’s circumstances. Therefore, try to balance between severity and strictness, and between softness and compassion, as leadership has a human character in the end

However, empathy should never be used to micromanage. Instead, it should inspire and support, giving your team the confidence and autonomy to thrive. One of the things I've noticed in a virtual world is that some people LOVE it and some people HATE it. Some people believe a video on a virtual call is essential; others are exhausted by staring into a camera all day. As a leader, it's your job to help every person on your team be their best. Have you asked your team members how they're doing with the virtual environment? Do you know what their preferences are? Do they have ideas for how to make the whole experience more comfortable and effective for them? Your team members will feel valued and appreciated when you ask them these questions, and it will give you the information you need to create the systems and expectations that help them be their best.

One more thing to consider is the tool used to communicate with your colleagues, particularly during a conflict or difficult time. Reduce the use of chats, privilege phone call or, even better, video call and, when possible, prioritize an in-person meeting to resolve the conflict / issue before coming back to remote working.

If we accept that the role of leadership is to create a team capable of succeeding then we should also accept that we develop our leadership skills by finding a way to embody and apply the behaviours needed to succeed remotely. One can speak, meet, inspire, coach, collaborate and check in on people remotely. One can suggest a catch up meeting over coffee online or in a coffee shop between two points - there doesn't have to be a barrier - the skills are the same - sometimes we just need to embrace the tech and emphasise communication more greatly to impact remotely.
