I always keep at least one or two pro bono and sliding scale openings in my practice in adherence with, and out of respect for, my field's expectations of our contribution to society and our community's well-being. Many times my colleagues and I will provide cost-free consultation as well for these reasons. When you set your rates, it is wise to consider these above-and-beyond investments of time and energy, and seek a financial balance that ensures your wellbeing first, so that you can avoid burnout and continue to make personal investments of your time and energy.
