My motivation for working in social and human services is my mother. She was a young black woman that moved up north from the south looking for better opportunities. My mom has a masters degree in accounting but was never afforded the opportunity to use her credentials. She was told there was no place for a black woman in accounting and she stopped following her dreams and aspirations to care for her kids as a single mother. I believe social services can be that door opener to bring hope back to broken dreams and spirits, if it is led with true passion. Finding the right resources and opportunities for individuals to continue the path they look to build and become successful in the journey is the missing link.

This is a difficult topic because I do not believe a person can ever understand this field. There are too many changing dynamics and inconsistent variables that shift with mood changes and life I believe your passion and interest today, can drive you but will it truly help you to fit into the different fields of social services. What I may enjoy now can burn me out in 5 to 10 years but at the same time my knowledge in this field can help push me in other areas of social services. This is why this topic is difficult to give a valid response to in my opinion.

One should definitely understand all of the considerations listed above. For me, if I could afford to do what I do for free, I would. (Which is funny in itself because we aren’t getting rich.) The privilege of providing safe space, advocacy, resources, insight, strategies and validation for others can’t be defined (for me). It is hard work, requires tons of dedication, continuous learning, compassion on the days you have none for yourself, evaluating your bias and boundaries constantly and willingness to conquer the documentation monster. That said, do it if your heart, mind and soul can do nothing else.
