Here's how you can deliver effective presentations in the field of Economics.

This is something that I have been continually tweaking Girl Economics to achieve. Getting the balance right between how much technical terminology against how much explanation is needed has been challenging, particularly because of the breadth of knowledge amongst our readership. But, I’m continually refining what I’m doing and trying to make Girl Economics as useful to as many people as possible!

Knowing the audience well is the first step to a good presentation. It allows you to dial up or down the technical level of the presentation to better connect with your audience and connection is key to a good presentation! For instance, use simpler terms or analogies relevant to them for a more layman audience. Conversely, crack insiders’ jokes or cite papers to convey greater professionalism and grasp of the topic.

Personalmente, pienso que existen dos tipos de audiencias: - Audiencia interesada en la parte técnica: Esta está interesada en la metodología de tu investigación, por lo que tú presentación debería abordar a detalle los pormenores metodológicos para luego finalizar en impactos y resultados. -Audiencia interesada en los resultados: Esta normalmente no está muy interesada en la metodología y entrar a detalle en la misma puede generar confusión y/o susceptibilidad. Con este tipo de audiencias es mejor centrarse en impactos y resultados, repasando brevemente la metodología.

An economics presentation is not complete without charts and graphs. A well chosen chart (pie, area, bar, line, bubbles, combined etc) with the right labelling (axis, legend, scale, colour) and using the right data from the right source is often one of the best gauge of the professionalism of the presenter. Another important tip - headings itself are fantastic visual aids too. I like to also use the slide headings as well as chart headings to help tell the story. Ideally, just reading all the slide headings gives you a great summary of the presentation and baits you to want to look at the charts and body of the slides. The charts chosen and their heading then provide further evidence to support the slide heading.

If you want your presentation to be understood by everyone, context and examples are equally important as significant results and good economic theory. You should always communicate your findings in straightforward words, using orders of magnitude if numbers are not clear, valid implications, and strong metaphors and analogies when appropriate. This final point has the potential to significantly enhance the impact of one's presentation. For example, scientists frequently employ the Bathtub analogy to demonstrate the link between carbon emissions and atmospheric CO2. Economists may also use an analogy between smoking addiction and climate change to highlight the factors that influence dangerous short-term actions.

Nobody is born a natural presenter. The only way for an excellent presentation is Practice, practice and more practice. Practice it with eye contact, then with hand gestures, next with some jokes and stories, throw in some questions for the audience. Adjust the timing, try doing it slower then faster, find the right tempo.. you get the gist now?

Listen to understand exactly what is being asked. Keep the answer short and simple, without beating around the bush. Try limiting it to not more than 3 main points, if you have more, choose the 3 most important ones. If possible, try link it back to the topic of the presentation.
