It's tough to put a dollar value on a mind. It's also hard to monetarily quantify success or progress in research. There are two things that spring to mind in research that could help someone negotiate a raise or help a company determine what pay is appropriate for someone. Publications can, to some extent, be used to assess a value of someone's work, but only to the extent that the publication is purchased by someone and the research organization sees a benefit. Also, if someone's research leads to the development of a new trading algorithm or another monetarily impactful result, then again, we can more easily assign a value to that. Not all economic research yields immediate monetization. A custom solution is often needed.
