Here's how you can convey your vision to your team with maximum impact.

I think the biggest mistake a lot of people make is that they decide the vision and then convey it to the team. This is actually the wrong approach. Ideally, what should happen is create a joint vision. How does this happen? This happens by making your team a part of the vision creation process so that it is not the leader's vision that they have to learn; it's the team's vision. Thus, people then have an automatic buy-in. That is what has worked for me and is the right way.

Definition of a vision is a combination of defining the future and then aligning your organization to it. Without the effort and time to drive alignment, visions are seldom achieved, and organizations spend time and resources course-correcting continuously. Take the time to drive alignment to that vision across your top leaders, and make sure they repeat that exercise with their teams. Visions are realized when everyone in the organization is aligned to them - this ensure that all the strategic and tactical decisions that follow are in support of that vision.

One mistake I have seen business owners make is curating a vision and hiring people who are misaligned or not interested in that vision. I believe in shared values and much more than defining vision and communicating it, hiring the right set of people to live that vision is great. I also believe in periodic vision alignment sessions such that bring the focus back to the teams away from processes and policies.
