I had to give this example to students recently. I explained to students that if you're applying to a tech job you should probably not include retail or other types of freelance work that you may have done outside of the area of technology. What this does is constructs a narrative that there is not enough time in the day for you to actually hone your craft in the area of expertise that you wish to, either transition to, or move further up in. What I have noticed is a trend of candidates listing skills that they desire to have, but do not currently possess. If you wish to be a software developer you should have skill in a programming language. Employers are not going to teach you on the job how to program, this is already expected.

A student must emphasize the projects that are most meaningful. If you have a GitHub page or you have written your own code, find a way to present that to the employers on your resume. Let's say your background is in a completely different career. Emphasize professional learning, perhaps you took a bootcamp or you were certified recently in a technology. Emphasizing your certifications higher on the list shows the employers you have real-world material skill.

Gaining practical experience can be a game-changer when transitioning into system development. Consider contributing to open-source projects or building your own applications to demonstrate your coding skills. These hands-on experiences can provide tangible proof of your abilities and show employers that you’re proactive about learning and applying new technologies.
