For example when I am communicating about financial data aggregation being in fintech industry, I give users an example of how when they go to a financial advisor and the advisor first collects the data on all the current assets and investments manually, compiles the data before giving any financial advise. Explain to them, when they enter these 2 informations into the user-interface (frontend UI) and click on login, the frontend UI sends these 2 informations to the server and the database there will check if these 2 data exist, maybe one after other. The API gets the 2 data and returns ok or wrong credentials which is the backend.

Put yourself into a 10 year old kid. Does a 10 year old kid know technical words if he never learned them? No, kids usually learn general knowledge words like bread or eggs and these kind of things and learn how to do math etc. Explain like you would share informations to someone who never had a touch with a computer. Explain to a kid with real life examples they already had. If they give an exam and fill out a paper and hand it after 45min to the teacher, do they know what the teacher does after he goes home? No? Exactly! The teacher verifies the informations you wrote on that piece of paper. The paper you filled your name and answers was the frontend what you can look at and feel, and the backend is what you don't see and get an answer.

Visual representations such as diagrams or flowcharts are invaluable. When I enhanced the CRM system for a telecommunications client, I used diagrams to show how data flows from one part of the system to another, helping to demystify the process.

From my experience, hand out a complete done flow chart to the team and present it after you already did it, is less productive than doing it with the whole team together. Why? Because we can correct it with 10 brains (if the team has 10 people means 10 developers in it) at the spot and learn how it works so everyone knows and understands it. Explain to non technical people simple real life actions they do in their daily life. Don't use any technical words with them. Be simple and present your things as easy as possible. Be the best possible teacher in your field. For most non technical people this is a very boring field and they don't have the motivation to learn with the love you already have as a software engineer with tools, programming languages and frameworks. Be easy to understand and put interesting real life examples into your presentation which already should be interesting for every each person in the room. Be funny and open with your knowledge. Because your knowledge is what makes you different to the non technical people out there. Have fun!
