Before starting to apply data governance to mitigate the risks it's very important to identify them. I'm not talking about the obvious one that your company might fear or the competitors have. I mean doing a job about understanding your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (never underestimate a good SWOT analysis). Learn about your maturity level and how it influences the decision making process. Talk to different teams (business and IT). After, extract the possible risks and analyze them with stakeholder. Once you did this exercise you will have a clearer idea about what do you have and after start thinking about how DG can help you to mitigate those risks. Then start implementing DG.

We may only have stores in one country now, but at the data and governance level we have to think about what the company could be like in a few years. We may have franchise stores or airport stores or stores in other countries. Getting ahead in terms of systems and processes is the key to good governance.

We must understand data governance not just as a cost to the organization, but as an investment to become more competitive. Strategically aligning data governance with overall business objectives (through strategic plans) is critical to ensure stakeholder buy-in and unlock the true potential of data as a strategic asset. Cultural shift may or may not happen, all depends on how well you build your communication strategy. You can start implementing DG without having a any communication at all and the result will be a lot of effort, 0 results and no cultural switch. If you have a good communication and change management plan, you will have less blockers and it will be easier to implement the strategy. The cultural change doesn't happen from one day to another. It requires time and strong leadership. Once you start improving processes, people's feeling about it and their perception about the technology, with the results will come the change that will follow to success.

Cultural change is a long-term job. Moving people out of their community zone is a challenge in organizations that are not very mature. The iterative implementation of data governance is undoubtedly a good way to raise this data culture.

Unlike traditional projects and programs, data governance is an ongoing, iterative process. It doesn't have a specific endpoint. Having recently enabled the foundations of data governance, some of my takeaways have been that data governance requires dedicated focus to build a strong core, comprising of tools, processes and culture. When the responsibility sits as part of an operational function, the priorities are often shifted towards operational issues and governance around issues rather than on the larger strategy. To get stakeholders along in the journey, it is key to showcase the business problems, articulate the strategic vision and be able to connect the solution to the vision. As a leader it is also important to constant reiterate the value delivered, so that the ROI on governance is made evident. Remember that the value can be qualitatively or quantitative.
