This is a staple of my management style. You must set clear expectations on day one. Measurable metrics must align to these expectations. So often I see or hear that employees think the task at hand is X and their managers are expecting Y. This can be avoided if a conversation while onboarding employees explains specific roles and responsibilities. (Ex. You will be expected to deliver a daily report by 10 a.m., the monthly budget is due by the 20th of each month, log all complaints and resolutions in customer feedback journal, etc.). This gives specific instructions and sets detailed expectations, which leaves little room for misunderstanding. Present this in writing and do frequently follow ups to ensure employees understand their role.
