I've found communities of practice to be one of the more valuable learning experiences as an executive. Something magical can happen when shared passion meets shared expertise, particularly in a mature community where trust and confidentiality are valued. I've found them useful for many things, including: industry collaboration to address common problems, informal peer benchmarking, exemplary practice sharing, pro-bono advice, and plain old encouragement from peers.

The trick to never messing up an opportunity lies in embracing the humble belief that you don't deserve it. This mindset doesn’t stem from self-doubt but from a profound respect for the privilege of each chance you receive. By approaching opportunities with the mindset that you’re not entitled to them, you remain perpetually grateful and driven to exceed expectations. This humility fuels relentless dedication and an eagerness to prove yourself, transforming every chance into a moment of growth and success. It’s not about believing you’re less, but about respecting the journey and striving to earn every moment.

Peer Learning = great teamwork and collaboration. It allows for your to growth in soft skills, information, alternative methods of executing to compliment your ability to help others. Mutual respect greatly increases success in delivery and learning together from mistakes and from successes, ensures future successes, and opportunities to learn. Don't be scared to admit if you don't know! No-one knows everything, and everyone had to learn, and it is a continuous process. The minute you think you know everything; you have failed yourself and have started to stagnate. Be open to change, evolution keeps learning opportunities coming, and peer learning is key.

Definitely the most interesting one in here, at least for me. I had huge learning curves not only as rookie on the job market but also with already some experience, everytime I had a good mentor. That just gives you an environment of constant learning and reflexion, while doing your day to day tasks and projects. Same thing counts for leadership. The difference I would say is that your mentors start getting more (for specific fields) because problems tend to get more and more complex (especially when working with people). On top of that I would say that being a mentor to others can also help to learn and develop yourself. At least, if you are still open for input from others, independent from where they are on their career ladder.

I live out the adage- "You're only as good as the people around you." Find people who are at the place where you want to be and spend time with them. If you ever want to get somewhere, you need to find directions. Those mentors can give you that direction to the success you want in your career. I would recommend gathering a different range of people as well, not just in your career but outside of it. Gather different perspectives in leadership!

"Readers are Leaders" I don't know who said this so I can't take credit for it. Rhythms/rituals are important to growth. I recommend creating a rhythm where you read a chapter of a book daily, 15-20 minutes. Habits will propel or destroy growth. Make sure you are creating ones that align with your professional goals.

I believe this can be done as you pursue your goals. Maybe they are yearly goals, five-year goals.. etc but you need to keep them in front of you and reflect on them regularly. It should be a part of your weekly and monthly rhythms! Reflect on where you are, and how to get where you want to go.

Often attributed to Albert Einstein, the well-known statement, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results," speaks to the value of reflective practice. Successful executive leaders habitually reflect on the outcomes of actions, thought processes, policies, etc., and the right time to reflect is just when others might want to rest or move on to the next task at hand. Making reflection a consistent part of problem solving, planning, and decision making gives the leader a basis from which to begin the next successful venture. What went well? What could be improved? What did we learn from the last event? As soon as the results are in, make sure to reflect and learn from past successes and failures.

Reflection, meditation and mindfulness add meaning to your work and life. It leads you to having peace of mind, clear heart and doing the right things. You’ll be a better version of yourself than the one yesterday.

Team building exercises provide great insight to both yourself and your team. I always like to lead with open conversation and open ended questions. This creates much needed dialogue in a less stressful manner.

Nip in the bud practices that retard growth. Constantly applying what is learnt is the high way to learn and grow more as an executive.

Embrace technology with wisdom. A car is meant to serve you and not you a servant to the car. If the latter is true, you’ll suffer for sure.

Reflective practice only has good results after a lot of interaction due to the examination of common realities beforehand. Without practical experience of interacting with others, with a common reality under examination, reflection has no content and is lost.
