Here's how you can confidently navigate challenging situations in consulting.

This happens more often than imagined! Here are my Big 5.. learned though experience & personally used to manage tough consulting situations. 1- Communicate – communicate – communicate – effectively & to a certain point over communication. 2- Absolute clarity on “scope of work” - what’s in & not - is another enabler. Lack of clarity on scope of work can be a major source of conflict with clients. 3- One style does not fit all. Be observant & adapt your style to meet the clients’ ways of working. 4- Cultural sensitivity & deep understanding of the client context can be a major help as well. 5- Regular updates that cover various layers of the client organization with predictable frequency & pre – fixed agendas is another big one.

Normalmente la percepción del riesgo es diferente según el interlocutor con el que se interacciona. Por ejemplo, para una gran empresa una probabilidad de éxito del 60% puede llegar a percibirse como algo arriesgado. No obstante, una startup puede entender un 10% de probabilidades de éxito como una oportunidad sin precedentes de triunfar. Como consultores, es muy importante ser transparentes con el cliente y dar nuestra opinión objetiva. El cliente debe ser consciente del riesgo que asume en cada decisión.

When faced with a challenge or crises, remember that communicating timely, honestly and openly is the key for maintaing trust with your clients. Present the issues clearly and concisely. Assess the potential impact with the team. Propose the next steps and align all of this with the client. Jointly come to the decision on the next steps and prepare a plan for actions. Execute upon that plan and track the progress.

Rapport and trust both go with each other.If the consultant is able to understand the client and build a good connection,it will help in sharing ideas and progress with a client in a much more effective way.Managing stakeholders and good communication skills will help consultant in building up a good professional relationship with the client.Make sure to work on softskills as well to give you an upper hand.

In consulting no two situations will be alike. But there could be common processes, tools or techniques that you can apply to create a starting/reference point. Once the fog begins to clear, you can create a working strategy for what could be the immediate next steps and build it there on step by step.

Effective communication is the key in handling challenges.Be open,clear and concise.Remember not to sugar coat.Share the truth in a manner that will help the client to understand the progress.Good listening and communications skills matter.Be mindful of the environment and even of your tone as well.Truth is always better than a comforting lie.

Being adaptable is very important during consulting.It can be either interms of knowledge and situation.Eventhing changes.Adapatability will ensure that you won’t consume resources unnecessary and keep you on track with clients requirements and demands.It always don’t mean changing the scope.Discuss with the client in such instances to ensure the perfect delivery for both.

Equanimity. Remember that word and drill it into your soul. This is your mantra. This is how you will want to be in every situation. Remember the adage, act in haste, repent in leisure. So let things pass and your mind will return to a steady state. Then you will see things clearly. Decide and act.
