Here's how you can choose between specializing in Grant Administration or pursuing a generalist career path.

This is absolutely true! As a generalist, you are versatile. A highly experienced generalist brings with them an understanding of how to identify funding opportunities, working with others and facilitating teamwork even with the most challenging personalities, compliance, research administration rules and regulations, finance and budgeting expertise, contracting experience, program design, grant writing success, and more! They may have worked on projects in many content areas whereas a specialist may have focused in one or a few content areas/disciplines such as health, education, academic research, or compliance. Whether a generalist or specialist, grant administrators help ensure project success.

Well, from my experience, a generalist background provides a better leverage to a specialisation in Grant Administration. Start by gaining experience in finance and accounting, project management, programme management, compliance and contract management. If you are able to grasp these sub-pillars, you should have a smooth ride as you specialise in grants management.

As a grant writer being a generalist is beneficial because you work with others who are specialists in their project area and I help them navigate the grant process which is my area of expertise. As a grant manager...leading a grant funded project....we tend to find our niche and learn about the goals and objectives in that particular field, specializing in creating impacts in that one area of service or research which produces results.

The term Grant Adminstration has two different meanings in the field. Colleges and larger organizations refer to Grant Adminstration as those specialized in the grant writing and tracking process often helping faculty to find funding, develop proposals, ensure compliance with funding and institutional policies and regulations etc. This position is often a generalist with a specialization in grant writing. In the nonprofit world Grant Administration/Management is often the individual who is responsible for carrying out the grant funded project. Often this person is a specialist in their particular field of interest (food security, veteran services, homelessness, k12 education, animal welfare, child development, domestic violence, etc.).

Ultimately, both paths offer advantages. Specialization can lead to depth and recognition, while generalization can lead to breadth and adaptability. Consider your strengths, interests, and career goals to determine which path aligns best with your aspirations. Remember, professional growth is not solely defined by specialization or generalization. Continuous learning, skill-building, and networking are essential for success in either path.
