It's important to be assertive without being abrasive to create that trust and credibility. I've seen people struggle with this balance. Being assertive means having a clear direction and articulating it effectively. You share your ideas and plans with confidence, aiming to inspire and create buy-in rather than forcing others to agree with everything you say. Your goal is not to convince everyone to think like you, but to share a vision that invites others to contribute and influence in their own unique ways.

Listen to understand first, then pause to respond. A few seconds of pausing allows you to maintain your composure in tense conversations and respond thoughtfully. And it allows the other person a moment to reflect too. Slow down to speed up problem-solving and conflict resolution.

Being consistent helps you build what is called "cognitive trust" or "trust of the head". This type of trust is based on the confidence you instill in your team when you are reliable, dependable and committed to deliver on promises. As a result of these consistent behaviors, your team and your stakeholders will notice that you are always present, either to offer your expertise when they need it or to listen. They will also appreciate the fact that you are responsive when it comes to meet or adjust individual and collective deadlines. When you can pair these consistent behaviours with a clear and transparent communication, one that is not too aggressive or dominant, it will earn the reslect of your team. Something to work on daily.

Consistency is the single contributing factor to building credibility and trust. Leaders who demonstrate assertiveness on a consistent basis indirectly give permission to others to be assertive as well. As leaders lead by example, others follow suit.

This is where self-awareness and emotional intelligence can really uplevel your leadership. Upon reflection, think of why you made the decisions you did, why you said what you said, why you didn't say what you didn't say. Reserve judgment and simply get curious. Assertive is not aggressive, it's decisive, confident and full of conviction. Knowing and loving the reasons why you do what you do creates a solid foundation and clear point of view that people will find calming, reliable and trustworthy - even when they're not thrilled with your decisions. You can't be a people-leader and a people-pleaser.

Some other points to reflect upon - 1. Do I stand by my decisions while being open to constructive feedback? 2. Can I take accountability if things dont go the desired way and take responsibility to course correct? 3. Do I demonstrate the behavior I expect from the team? 4. Do I uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity in all my actions?

Trust has three pillars: Does someone: 1) Trust they are getting the authentic version of you 2) Trust that you care (compassion) 3) Trust your logic / reasoning Assertiveness is critical to building trust in your logic and reasoning, but without authenticity and compassion, that assertiveness won't lead to trust and credibility in a sustainable way.

Building trust and credibility as a leader hinges on your ability to be assertive without being overbearing. Start by clearly communicating your expectations and boundaries, ensuring everyone understands their roles and responsibilities. What else to consider? Balance assertiveness with empathy—listen actively to your team’s concerns and feedback. Be consistent in your actions and follow through on your commitments, as reliability strengthens trust. Personalize your approach by sharing your own experiences and challenges, demonstrating vulnerability and authenticity. Remember, assertiveness is about being confident and respectful, fostering an environment where open dialogue and mutual respect thrive.

Building trust and credibility through assertiveness is one of the sustainable ways of doing so. You can sweet talk to attract but it is not sustainable, you can be honest to the point of sounding brutal but that would not do good either. The best way to go about it is to be direct (authentic) and clear (no beating around the bush) in your communication, however, cultivate empathy and demonstrate respect in how you communicate - both ways when you are speaking or listening.
