Education, further training, courses and so on are fundamental for theoretical qualification, but cannot replace practical experience in the field. A strong team behind you, the support of mentors, a network of experienced professionals are the sources that can underpin theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Nobody is perfect and should never have the feeling of being left alone. Either they swim or sink.’ That implies that a person put directly in the job, will dirty his hands and learn the hard way. This way a person when faced with problems will seek solutions from experienced people, refer documents, journals and find solutions. Working with an experienced mentor can help in getting good exposure. On job training gives a lot of confidence to a person and will be able to handle challenges. During my career, I used to delegate and give freedom to people down the line. But always looked over their shoulders so no mistakes are made.

Mentorship is a great way to bring your team along to the next level while also learning good habits. We tend to promote to early in the construction industry due to lack of staff, and this can have a negative effect on the wider team. As soon as you get a younger member of staff, get them working under your more experienced staff member, but make sure they have a good attitude and believes in the company culture. As much as mentorship is great, it can be a disaster if undertaken by somebody who isn’t keen on doing it.
