Here's how you can become a film producer by following these necessary steps.

While not mandatory, formal education in film or related fields provides valuable insights: Technical Expertise: Learn filmmaking fundamentals like screenwriting, directing, and editing. Business Skills: Gain knowledge in budgeting, scheduling, and personnel management. Comprehensive Foundation: Combine these skills for a well-rounded understanding of film production.

If you are just starting out, work and a SET PA. It's best role in the business because your primary job is to HELP everyone else do their specific job. You can truly see how the machine is supposed to work... but stop there, then go produce a short film on the weekend. Give yourself a deadline, and either no money or a couple hundred bucks. But treat it professionally. Communicate with everyone. Hire 2-3 key people to cover the different departments (i.e 1 person for Camer/G&E, 1 person for Art/Wardrobe, 1 person for Sound, You the producer handles locations/food/production). If you do this, you will learn very fast. Nothing is more informative than making something, but you have to treat it professionally. And then you will excel.

Learn by doing. Understand what you don't know by taking projects head on. Like many fields when you start out, you know very little. Even more than that, you don't even know what you don't know. By starting small with short films, music videos, spec commercials, and developing those you will learn a lot. More importantly you will learn about the things that you have very little knowledge about. That's a great step to learning more, seeking out mentors, connecting with other producers, and then asking the right questions. Diving in with little knowledge and developing small projects is the best way to do that. More than just being a producer, it applies to being a filmmaker trying to figure out what it means to be a filmmaker.

Talk to people. Ask the dumb questions. Listen to podcasts, interviews, workshops, etc but also take time to chat with the DP, the Grip, Art Dept, and everyone in every department to learn what is important to them. What is helpful, what is the common challenge, where do they see their priorities. The more you learn about all the moving parts of a film production, the better you can produce it by empowering everyone else to do what they do best.

"Expectation Determines Experience" this is my mantra. Be very clear from the very beginning about the project you are making. If it's super low budget make sure the team understands that and signs up for that project. If the film has a bigger budget, make sure the team understands that and signs up for it. Bigger shows, need extra hands and you don't want someone cutting corners. Smaller shows need a DIY scrappy mentality and you don't want someone who doesn't enjoy that style of work. If you give someone the wrong expectation, they will have a bad experience. If you give them an accurate expectation, they will have a great experience and so will everyone else.
