Here's how you can balance work and continue your education as a Product Manager.

Define your educational objectives and how they align with your career aspirations as a Product Manager. Efficient time management is crucial. Allocate specific time slots for work, study, and personal activities. Identify tasks that are urgent and important for both work and education. Communicate with your employer about your educational pursuits. Take advantage of resources available for both work and education. Stay disciplined and focused on your goals. Don't hesitate to seek support from colleagues, mentors, or fellow students. Remember to prioritize self-care and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning. Regularly assess your progress and adapt strategies accordingly.

Let me share a personal example here. While I was working as a Product Manager, I pursued an intensive 18 month Executive MBA program, which required me to travel every few weeks for classes and demanded at least 20-25 hours per week of study time. I was able successfully manage this by being consistent and disciplined. Each night I dedicated a few hours towards my MBA coursework, no matter what the circumstance. Essentially during the day I prioritized my work and during the night I prioritized my MBA coursework. Consistency and Discipline can work wonders for you in various aspects of your life. I used to believe in the fact that product manager somehow a CEO for his product. You are managing directly and indirectly everyone in the value chain from R&D to service till product phaseout. You are managing business case for investment decisions. You are managing technical aspects. Also operations and customer relationships. Using technology and putting strategies and monitor markets with accountability of P&L. As a product manager your contribution is everywhere all the time. This is my answer about how serious product managers have to keep learning whatever comes in their way.

Personally, if it's not on my calendar, it doesn't exist. This is why I schedule my learning based on what I'm doing. Recently I learned how to build and train an LLM, then deploy it into GCP. There's no way I would have been able to focus on the weekend with my daughter, so I have to be intentional about my time. As a result, I schedule a few hours a week just for learning and sharpening the saw. I do the same for deep thinking, and various other aspects of product that require more of me than others.

Identify what you want to achieve through further education. Whether it's gaining new skills, earning a certification, or staying updated with industry trends, having clear goals will help you stay focused.

Select a course, certificate, training or list of sessions every week/month to be your learning goals and then try to stuck with your goals. It's very useful to set your quarterly or yearly plan and break it down into monthly or weekly targets.

Know exactly what you aim to achieve with your studies. Determine if it is to address a technical gap, take on new positions or challenges, or any other reason. Set the timeline, what to learn, how to do it, and how you want to visualize yourself after the learning process, as well as how long it will take to achieve this. This will help maintain discipline and see results during challenging times.

Here are 2 things I've done to upskill while balancing a full-time job: - Take courses relevant to my industry/products: Dedicating 30 minutes a day to upskilling has proven more effective for my growth than hours of continuous work. Most organizations provide internal and external resources to help employees upskill in their domain, make the most of these resources. - Book clubs at work: My peers and I have a book club where we discuss one interesting PM, leadership, or management-related book each month. We also share how we plan to integrate the learnings into our workflows. Use this platform to connect with your peers, gain fresh perspectives on key concepts, and learn from their experiences.

Apply New Concepts: Implement new theories or techniques in your tasks. Use new frameworks for product discovery, advanced data analysis, or innovative design principles. This reinforces learning and shows its practical value. Share Insights: Regularly communicate new knowledge with your team through discussions, meetings, or knowledge-sharing sessions. This helps your team grow and positions you as a thought leader. Lead Aligned Initiatives: Identify and lead projects that align with your studies. This solidifies your learning and showcases your proactive approach and leadership skills.

A product team understands, at their core, that a successful product is tied to the teams rate of learning. Product Discovery - experiments, instrumentation of products, user interviews, etc. - is the majority of a PMs job and it's all about collecting insights and learning. You will learn about your users, you will learn about technology, you will learn about other trades (finance, operations, legal, etc.) and you will learn soft skills. Learning is your job, and how lucky you are that is the case.

If it's not on the calendar/todo list, it's likely not getting done. Dedicate small moments of time to learning, which could be as simple as a 30 min LinkedIn Learning session per week. Over the span of a year that is 52 sessions -> over 1 full day (26 hours) of learning in your spare time!

In my experience, I seamlessly applied new concepts and methodologies from my coursework to enhance product management practices, thereby reinforcing my knowledge while showcasing its practical value to my employer. By proactively sharing insights and leading initiatives aligned with my studies, I created a dynamic feedback loop that benefited both my professional development and organizational goals. This approach not only underscored my commitment to continuous learning but also positioned me as a thought leader within my team.

I believe balancing work and continuing education can be achieved through effective time management practices, a crucial skill for any Product Manager. Start by determining the proper balance between work and education in your ideal day, keeping in mind work prioritization, trade-offs, etc. You might find the 70-20-10 rule helpful. It helps allocate time based on task importance, and can be adapted to include continuing education. For example, you could use 70% of your time on job-related tasks, 20% on discovery and ideation, and 10% on education. Additionally, try managing your educational workload with a personal kanban board. List all your personal tasks in a "to-do" column, prioritize them, and move each task through "doing" to "done."

Learning is continuous but increasingly challenging due to the rapid pace of change, which disrupts our balance between personal well-being and career. Personally, I've found the following strategies very helpful and time-saving: 1. Join focus groups. 2. Attend meetups. 3. Subscribe to top industry newsletters and use AI to summarize them. 4. Prioritize your focus areas to excel—remember, you can do anything but not everything. 5. Use LinkedIn effectively; many people specialize in one area, and you can learn to divide and conquer from them.
