Here's how you can articulate your ideas and proposals in a Higher Education profession.

Tailor your message to address their specific needs and concerns. For faculty, emphasize academic rigor and research impact. With administrators, focus on efficiency and institutional goals. For students, highlight learning outcomes and career opportunities. Adapting your communication style to resonate with each group ensures clarity and relevance, fostering support and achieving your objectives effectively.

This is good signposting practice. Having sub-pages within your presentation or proposal that list the objective/focus at hand helps to walk the audience through your points and keep them engaged. The golden rule of 3 things that Rebekah mentioned is useful and helps to impose narrative structure (beginning/middle/end). You might find that there are so many points you wish to cover but it is just about finding the right framework or segmentation that captures all those points within three areas or buckets that will get the message across.

I like to focus on the 3 things you want your audience to takeaway from your idea/proposal presentation. What do you want them to remember? Focus on that.

Using a structured argument helps articulate ideas and proposals clearly and persuasively. By logically organizing points, supporting them with evidence, and addressing counterarguments, you create a compelling narrative. This method enhances understanding, builds credibility, and facilitates informed decision-making, leading to more effective communication and successful outcomes.

A consulting approach I've found particularly effective is the Minto Pyramid Principle. This begins with the conclusion up front, followed by three (or more) supporting points. This differs from the usual logical structure we learn in Logic 101, where Premise 1, Premise 2 are followed by the Conclusion as part of a valid logical structure. While this may appear counter-intuitive, I found that it actually helps your audience to focus their attention more effectively to evaluate what you're saying next. This also avoids the "so what?" trap that may leave your audience wondering at times, and helps you appear more focused and authoritative in putting your argument across.

By tapping into emotions, you can also create some urgency. Often times your listener may be considering other issues at the same time. Why is this an issue we should consider now? Can you tell a story that motivates and inspires action?

Ultimately facts are meant to point one towards decision-making. While we like to think of ourselves as being rational actors, adding anecdotes or analogies help to provide contextualisation that ultimately results in a more effective call-to-action. This also harnesses the power of EQ in getting your point across and makes you more relatable in terms of the ideas you are putting forward. It simplifies the message and forces you to think about looking at things from the audience's perspective - which is important when communicating effectively.

Less is more in this instance. If we consider from a neuroscientific perspective how much information the human brain can process in a given moment (40 to 50 bits per second), minimalist visual aids can actually help to anchor the audience's attention to what you're saying rather than deciphering the mass of information on a complex chart. While we always want to appear well-prepared and informed in a presentation, sometimes too much information becomes more of a crutch rather than an aid. Focus on the message.

The best advice I ever received was a simple one: remember to breathe. Nerves can get the better of everyone on a big day. Practicing the presentation several times is definitely helpful and I would also suggest running it through your mind to visualise how you would perform, much like how athletes do to achieve peak performance. This puts you more in a state of flow, which does not mean you speak incessantly to cover all the points, but rather being more perceptive and thus better anticipating the reaction from the audience. Always remember: the audience wants you to succeed too :) We've all sat in awkward presentations before trying to will the speaker on to their next point rather than watch them flounder.
