It is also extremely valuable to find yourself a mentor to discuss your career goals. The mentor could be someone who is an established leader in the field, someone whose career truly inspires you. Your supervisor could be your mentor as well but it depends on the organisation and the person.

Most people approach a discussion about their career goals by starting and stopping at "I would like to be promoted/grow/etc." I had been there myself, and it DID NOT WORK. You must be clear about what you want and how to get there. Obviously, your "want" should be reasonable. ??????????????: What: "I aim to lead a biomarker discovery team." How: - Measurable goal: "Within the next two years, I want to complete advanced training in bioinformatics and lead at least two projects that result in patent filings." - Monitoring: "We can review and adjust my progress every 6 months to ensure I'm on track." If your supervisor ignores your VERY specific goals and any progress you are making on them, you are with the wrong boss and/or company.

For example, if you are interested in AI but don't have experience working on AI projects yet, then reach out to AI leaders in your company and ask them how you can contribute to AI projects. Potentially there will be opportunities for you to learn new high in demand skills as well as to demonstrate your willingness to continuously learn and upskill.
