Here's how you can apply problem solving skills to tackle specific challenges in Educational Technology.

Use First Principles Thinking! Often, we identify problems that are not the core issue but ancillary consequences of a core problem. And when we do that, we waste time solving a problem that has deeper roots. Using the concept of First Principles Thinking to identify the most basic level of a core issue can be a saving grace.

Always identify the issue but ask a few more questions. Toyota uses the 5 why's principal which is simply to ask why 5 times to get to the actual root cause. Make sure you keep in mind what is trying to be accomplished. Too many times people have had an issue that wasn't even an issue when I found out what they were trying to accomplish. We needed to go a different way. It's like when you go into the doctor and tell them your back hurts and then she determines that it's not a back problem it's your kidney and the solution is altogether differrent. Get good at diagnosing by asking why and always keeping the goal in mind.

Penso ser útil analisar as causas subjacentes. Por que os alunos est?o lutando? Pode ser devido à complexidade do conteúdo, falta de interatividade no material ou dificuldades de acesso à tecnologia.

I mentioned this above but ask those 5 why's. Why is this a problem? Why is that a problem? Etc., etc. This will help you determine first principals that are out of line. There may be something to fix at every why but the best place to start is the problems at the 5th why and work out from there.

Three major components to a good brainstorm: 1. Highly qualified people present 2. New and less qualified people present 3. Willingness to through out dumb ideas and suggestions I love shaking thinking in these types of meetings by throwing out solutions from other scenerios that may or may not apply in execution but could apply in principal. The questions appear dumb but they help us expand our area of search for solutions.

You ever read the instructions on a stain remover or cleaner that says, "Use in an inconspicuous area first," or something to that extent? Do that here. Test a solution befor implementing it at scale. Test in a few inconspicuous places. On our end there is so much data that an error may not become apparent in the first few places but will pop up somewhere. Better somewhere than everywhere.
