Sometimes a team non-activity - like giving everyone a day or 1/2 day off after an intense deliverable helps as much in team bonding as doing an organized activity together. It has to be the whole team though so that there are no emails flying back and forth and leadership has to be bought in.

While it's important to celebrate victories, it's equally important to determine why you succeeded in the first place so you can replicate those victories in the future. Was it because your communication was exceptional, or did you uniquely leverage a new platform? Pinpointing the specific reasons for your successes enables you to replicate and exceed that success in the future instead of hoping for luck to strike.

Don’t fear the reaper…. And don’t fear metrics… Appropriate metrics should be applied to even the most basic of new product developments. Team leaders and their teams with agreement from decision makers should discuss and review which metrics- drawn from three distinct areas, 1) Business, 2) Project and 3)Process- should be assigned to the project they are working on. Very likely in the beginning metrics applicable to assessing the Process and perhaps some associated with the Project will provide data that could underpin why individual or the team in general has earned a well deserved “good job”. The more you can base recognition on fact the more meaningful and welcomed it will be to all concerned.

A proper engineer is always a drug-addict. ;) The drug name is dopamine. :) Every time a problem is solved, a solution is found - the engineer receives a monstrous hormone-kick. So, celebrating successes is an explicit form is really secondary because it already takes place. :)
