Although more and more users are now familiar with VR (due to the accessibility of the Quest headsets), many are still coming to VR experiences for the first time. A thoughtful on-boarding process is very important, so that each user will know what to expect and how to engage with your virtual world. Is your experience interactive? Or passive? Giving this important key at the top effectively gives the user permission to engage without wondering whether they're doing it wrong. And as you're designing, remember how amazing it felt the very first time you put on a headset yourself. Build in that moment of wonder for your users!

For example, in education we have had to meet multiple schools in our process, but we should have met with them prior to our process and understood what they needed - THEN built it. Of course, it will continue to be iterative and you will build on it, but you must start and end with the needs of your TAM to properly capture market share. VR experiences inherit the challenges of designing for 2D applications, such as reducing cognitive load. What is new is the ergonomic load of tasks. For example, using a UI to interact with menus is natural in a 2D application. In VR, you may find that throwing a ball, grabbing something from a backpack, or even turning to face the other direction may be more suitable actions.
