As a project manager, aligning project goals with overall business objectives requires a clear understanding of both. Begin by thoroughly reviewing the company’s strategic goals and identifying how the project contributes to them. Communicate with key stakeholders to ensure project goals are relevant and aligned with the broader vision. Break down high-level business objectives into measurable project deliverables, ensuring the team understands how their work impacts the organization. Regularly track and adjust project progress, keeping it aligned with shifting business needs. This approach ensures that the project drives meaningful value toward the company’s long-term success.

Business goals are the guiding force behind driving any particular project successfully. As a project manager, I think we should take a step back and spend some time in understanding business goals/objectives in a very clear manner before we move ahead in the project journey. Upon understanding of business objectives, it is imperative to align the same with project goals/deliverables so that overall business objectives are met while the project goals are also achieved. This would require a collaborative approach, engagement with stakeholders across the ecosystem to instill a sense of confidence in the project goals.

My only adjustment here would be to make the goals SMART-A (sure play on the Boston accent that most Kennedy's have)... the A stands for Adjustable. Too often goals are set and then immediately carved in stone. Set goals, pursue them but be open to new information and data that suggests the Achievable aspect is off the table.

John Maynard Keynes famously said, “When the facts change, I change my mind.” Rigid goals are a project’s worst enemy. Stay flexible and evolve the objectives as new insights emerge. The real key to alignment is simplicity and agility, not over-engineering complexity.

When dealing with translating strategy down into the business I like to have a senior leader or executive set the stage and allow that to be the kick of of stakeholder engagement.

Involving stakeholders early ensures expectations are clear and priorities are aligned. Regular communication keeps everyone on the same page and avoids misalignment. For example, when managing a product launch, constant collaboration with marketing, R&D, and finance teams ensures unified goals.

Take a page from Amazon's "Day 1" philosophy: every project should always feel like the first day. A continuous loop, where feedback is always flowing in, ensures that both project and business objectives evolve together. The best feedback system is one that's embedded, not scheduled.

Once the project is complete, review both successes and gaps. Were the business goals achieved? Did the project enhance value? Reflect on what worked and adapt future project strategies to better align with evolving business priorities.

Look at how Netflix pivoted from DVDs to streaming—they didn’t just reflect, they reinvented themselves. Take bold steps and pivot hard if needed. Sometimes, the best strategy isn't to adapt, but to disrupt.
