In order to continue to advance in the business services sector, you will want to research and network to understand your options and learn more about each option. Having a mentor or a sponsor can be helpful so that you are aware when opportunities arise and you are prepared to make that next step Goals and hard work are important to build your skill set and ensure you are prepared but valuable relationships help you identify the right opportunities and make the introductions. Defining your desired destination can be helpful, however, being flexible on how you get there and open to what you can learn along the way may help you discover an even better career opportunity

Clear career goals are like your personal GPS in the business services world—they guide every step with purpose. It’s not just about climbing the ladder but knowing exactly which floor you want to reach. Start by mapping your strengths and passions to market needs, then set SMART goals that turn ambition into action. With a clear destination in sight, each move you make gets you closer to your vision. After all, you can’t arrive at your dream destination without first choosing it.

Your goals must be clear and measurable, but give yourself enough space to make adjustments if you find over time that you have outgrown some of your goals or if the direction you're heading needs to change. You may find that on your way to your destination, the snags you hit redirect you to something better.

I like this perspective. I would add that you will want to continue to update your skills in areas that are your strength and that you really enjoy. I am a big advocate for doing what you love because you will always be great at it and you will want to continue to learn more and grow. This will make you attractive to senior leaders and fellow team members.

I’ve always been a strong advocate for self-made curriculums. In my opinion, the best approach is to build a comprehensive learning path that covers all aspects of your industry. My focus areas are Value Creation, Marketing, Sales, Value Delivery, and Finance. Each of these categories offers a wealth of knowledge through books, audiobooks, and video lectures—my personal favorite being Udemy. While expertise in your specific category is essential, expanding into other areas helps you understand how your work impacts those downstream. For those in sales, mastering all five categories is crucial to stand out and excel in the talent pool.
