Delayed feedback is not good. The known facts are things like shifting project timeline, resource constraints and misunderstood scope of work. The unknown such as - why delayed? What happened? It is good to explore this to get the better and full picture. I remember a friend told me a moment when delayed feedback costs them two pallets shipments of products; the products that the customers want changed but unable to due to delay. It turns out the person who is supposed to communicate that was on maternity leave. Get it sorted.

An excellent example of what I experienced is that in engineering & QA there are schedule’s that must be met, therefore my Supervisor made it known that if you didn’t meet these tasks & targets on time there would be Consequences. Whether it would be Low Quarterly Grades or written up and put in your Personal Folder. Keep in mind i worked on a Military Base & and Ship’s Schedule was Crucial. I knew I had a Job to Perform & Requirements to meet.

As you can read my comment above the delayed feedback was because a person was in an unplanned situation - could be done better, of course. How to do better? Open up communication. Have back up email in all communication relating to critical information. I noticed my clients are practicing this where any email will be cc to another group email so it helps when someone isn’t around, the group email still there to know where the situation left of. Another is to do daily check-in & stand up. I found agile practices this and it helps catch up on things within 24 hours.

While automation is good for a while, once normalized we tend to ignore it. Take for example your socmedia notifications, do you check them anymore & all the time? You can try the group email, escalation system (after certain SLA hours it auto escalate to next level), stand up check in, logs wall and to do list. You can also use technology such as Evernote, Trello, Slack etc to collaborate.
