To me, this is the most important part of any human interaction, artistic or otherwise. You need to be able to effectively and clearly communicate, settle on common language, etc to keep everyone on task and keep the ball rolling. Without clearly stating where you come from and how you're feeling about it, you cannot hope to achieve your desired result. In a creative field, the ultimate goal is to bring a certain feeling, emotion, or "vibe" to a project, so being in touch with your own feelings and not being afraid to go deeper than a standard business interaction should not only be required, but encouraged.

Effective communication is the cornerstone not only in the Music industry, but also in every industry .. it actually is key for evey interaction on a personal and business level.

Here's the thing I've learned from 20+ years in the music industry in whatever capacity: there are a lot of big egos and a lot of fragile people, and the skill isn't always there to match. If you're looking to lead a music project, you need to be very adept at understanding and navigating people's confidence, mitigate their arrogance, and assert yourself as the final decision maker when necessary. You may find that this costs you some talent, because as skilled as some players are, they are not team players, and have no patience for compromising their own vision. Always be willing to say goodbye to someone toxic... and try not to be that guy, either.

There are those that will tell you they know where the industry is going. Good for them. Come back to me in 5 years and tell me how it worked out. Chances are they were full of it. Just know this entire industry is shady. If you give someone an opportunity to exploit you, they will. Protect yourself at all times, and only part with the rights to your material when you feel you've been fairly compensated. As for being on top of changes, it moves fast. A thorough knowledge of emerging styles' root systems (classical, jazz, bebop, blues, pop, etc) will help you navigate it quickly enough. Fundamental knowledge will be a saving grace for you long term. Keep learning, but keep revisiting the basics too, that's where the real skill is.

This is literally no different than any other field. You need to level up, you need to get better. Music is fun, but it needs some brevity, so keep it in the back of your head to take your fun seriously. Challenge yourself. Keep listening critically, but try to remain uncritical. Everything has something to teach you. It might be lyrics, it might be two notes, or an arrangement you hadn't considered, or even what NOT to do in a song... but there is value in all of it, regardless of your personal taste. The more you can absorb, and the more you challenge yourself to do, the better off you'll be. Get out of your comfort zone. That's where the magic is!
