It really helps to fasten the learning process In addition to all this I think it's very important to have a support system to cheer you on. It gets tedious sometimes and you really need those people around you to push you.

Networking is definitely an underrated skill for instance you attend a conference and you meet other developers from other companies or other continents and you ask about what technologies they are using, you realize there's diverse range of technologies out there and they are ever evolving. You may also be forced to look it up and try it out and you sometimes realize it's an easier way to doing what could have been a tedious process in your place of work.

Technology is a disruptive field. It's ever changing and you cannot stay rigid. It's a fact that our careers will be lived out in a constant transition. And just like Charles Darwin said " it is not the most intellectual species that survive, but the one that is able to adapt or adjust best to the changing environment it finds itself" So as technology changes, it is very important for people to adapt the new technologies as well as for companies to embrace them. We've seen companies go out of business for not being able to adapt to the changing environment. Upskilling and reskilling is definitely something that we are forced to accept.

Change is inevitable, and your ability to adapt will define your progression (in most cases). It is always better to have a balance between your core niche skills and awareness of the broader market so you can capture the next opportunity as the demands shifts.

You didn't need an understanding of blockchain twenty years ago, but you do need it in fintech today. In high school I decided to learn as many computer languages as I could. Just because. Now, with the exception of FORTRAN and COBOL (which have been updated repeatedly) those are relegated to the dustbin of history. Go, Python, Rust, C++, Ruby weren't around then, but I use them today. The lesson here is simple -- don't rely solely on past knowledge or skills or you too will be a part of that dustbin of history. This doesn't mean you are useless -- in some fields COBOL and FORTRAN are still highly valued today, but not in my areas of interest. Remember to learn the skills and tools of the areas you want to work in and keep abreast of new developments in those areas.

I think we as software engineers always find an easier way to do everything. It is problem solving in itself. If it can be done more easily and efficiently by software development or any other way why would we want to still hold on to a traditional way. Software engineering is all about solving problems.

Giver a person a fish and they're fed for a day, but teach them how to fish and they're fed for a lifetime. And what's the lesson here? Just reading a technology is like getting a fish -- it (hopefully) makes sense as you read it. But using a technology really shows you how to use it. I always create some kind of toy system whenever I want to understand a thing. And sometimes I come back to my old toys and update them to work with the newer systems. Groking something, for most people, requires that they use/do the thing. That's why there's homework. And to keep current you need to assign yourself homework too.
