Behavioral Interviews – Aim to assess how you'd fit into a team and handle real-world scenarios. Questions often focus on past experiences, problem-solving abilities, and how you handle stress or failure. How to prep - Understanding the specific requirements of the role you’re applying for. - Brush up on your technical skills that are relevant to the position. - Reflecting on past experiences and how they showcase your skills and character.

It’s not just about CIA and technical background, etc…although these play a big part. It’s equally about being part of a team, being a professional, taking ownership and getting things done. Being able to talk to business people and other techs is just as important. Demonstrating that you can be pragmatic and support the business is key to being a trusted resource.

Knowing your basics is crucial to getting any cybersecurity job. Fundamental knowledge in computer networking, operating systems, and computer architecture is needed in most of these roles. You cannot secure something without knowing what you're securing and how it works. Aside from these fundamentals, use the job description to your advantage. Be ready to discuss each written concept at least at a high level, even if you're not experienced in it.

Understanding the fundamentals such as the CIA triad is imperative for anyone in the field. Over my career, starting from an entry-level position to my current role as the Director of Information Security at Meeza, I've seen how crucial a solid foundation is. We need to master these core concepts to effectively protect against and mitigate common attack vectors. To ace your cybersecurity interview, thoroughly research the company and its cybersecurity needs. Familiarize yourself with common cybersecurity concepts, tools, and best practices. Practice answering technical and behavioral questions, highlighting your relevant experience and problem-solving skills. Demonstrate your passion for cybersecurity and willingness to continuously learn and adapt. Prepare questions to ask the interviewer to show your interest and engagement. Finally, dress professionally, arrive early, and exude confidence during the interview.

Cybersecurity is about doing basics right but it is critical to understand the Crown Jewels, landscape and critical resources. Not knowing the company, its nature of work, impact and scale, will be recipe of disaster. Also the regulations, compliance and laws differ based on industry. Researching a company before facing the interview will never be a good idea.

Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) as an outline to talk about your experience. For example: Situation - A company was losing money on a new product due to inefficiencies. Task - I was hired to analyze the product development lifecycle and I found several areas where teams were duplicating efforts and increasing costs. Action - I designed and implemented new procedures to allow for more collaboration and communication between teams. Result - The more efficient process reduced production time by 30%, and the product became profitable. Go into as much detail as you need to tell the story. Using this outline helps to keep your story focused on your ability to analyze the situation, take action, and achieve results.

Make sure you can talk about relevant previous experience. It might not be a 100% fit, but if you think about it, there is definitely something you did that would apply in their context.

Always have question. Whether it's on their roadmap, their current problems or challenges. It's always a good option to have something to ask about. You can ask about the team, the internal culture, the mindset... It might not even have to be technical, but show your interest for this job in this company.

Here are some of the tips 1. Be clear to articulate what you have accomplished/contributions on the cybersecurity field in relation to job's ask 2. Know the basic concepts on the cybersecurity field ( CIA concepts, protect/defend , remediate , secure communication etc) 3. If you are a generalist, stay updated on basic threats and security solutions that you will apply to protect data, platform, application and services in your network 4. If you are a specialist, showcase your practitioner/expert skills on pen testing an application or a system; dev sec ops works that you have done to build controls around your application/asset ; or the security services that you have built that qualifies for security engineering or operations .

I like to take the job description and paste it into an AI chatbot. Asking the bot to generate 20-30 interview questions based on the description. It helps to use more than one chatbot as well.

Knowing how you'll fit into the team is crucial. Ask questions about the team structure, collaboration style, and mentorship opportunities. Understanding the company culture helps you determine if it aligns with your values and preferred work environment.
