I think basic of energy modelling and optimization is first to have before going for any modelling. One should understand linear programming and optimization to start with modelling. Another basic requirements is itself understanding of electrical as modelling all depends on input, the more precise the input better will be the result.

In my experience, modeling any energy process requires a critical understanding of the basics involved in the operation i.e., its material and energy balance followed by using them in empirical models of the operations as input.
