This is a hot topic, and I have faced it my career with two of the largest M&A in Financial Services. the secret to success in these challenging situations is - EMPATHY. You see every human wants to be heard and appreciated. During difficult times it's a magnifier. Listen and listen to the other deeply with complete empathy. Look them in the eye and soften your tone. Authority and ego are waste during these times. Be genuine and truthful. That develops trust. Give them that extra 5 minutes, walk up to their cube for a chat once a while and ask about their family, hobbies etc. Friendships like these are long lasting. HR and 3rd person is last resort and that actually creates resistance and dislike. Be patient and consistent-it works.
