If you know your material inside out, and upside down, you can speak without notes, with seconds of notice or preparation (or none). I recall an event for a professional organisations. The speaker didn't pr couldn't turn up. I was asked to speak as soon as the call was made. How was it delivered? By conveying the five key points in an interactive, audience participatory way. When you know your material, notes are not necessary.
