Dealing with a passive-aggressive coworker requires a calm, constructive approach. Start by observing patterns and documenting incidents to have concrete examples. Choose a private moment to address the behavior directly but without accusations—focus on how it affects the team's progress. For example, “I noticed some delays and indirect comments; is there anything you’d like to discuss?” Encourage open communication, offering collaboration rather than confrontation. If the behavior persists, involve the project lead or manager, framing the issue as one affecting teamwork and outcomes. Stay professional and focus on finding solutions, not fueling conflict.
-
The key is to address the underlying frustration rather than the behavior itself. Start by observing patterns - what triggers the passive-aggressive actions? Approach them in a private, neutral setting, but instead of calling out the behavior directly, frame it around collaboration: "I’ve noticed that things have been tense lately, and I’m wondering if there’s anything about the project that’s bothering you. I’d like to understand so we can work better together." Shift the focus from their reactions to the problem itself. Ask specific questions that dig into their frustrations: “Is there something about how tasks are divided that you’re unhappy with?” Honest communication without putting them on the defensive.
-
Passive-aggressive behavior can stem from a fear of?confrontation or rejection, low self-esteem, and poor coping skills. While it can be highly damaging to relationships, it is possible to learn more assertive communication strategies.

To start, I want to state that this type of behaviour is UNACCEPTABLE! The reality is that in these situations, emotions run high and can ultimately drive how you deal with the passive-aggressive colleagues. It's super important that when dealing with any situation you maintain composure and always be professional. These types of behaviours are not always easy to spot. Approach the person directly, stay calm and ask questions to try and understand the reason for this behaviour. I have created a set of values and behaviors that I hold my teams accountable to as well. Encourage open communication so that people feel comfortable addressing issues. Take care of yourself by distancing yourself from the passive-aggressive colleagues.

One thing I have found helpful is observing and studying the personality you’re dealing with to try to handle it well as much as possible so we can end up hitting our targets with least resistance
